1. The engine will not start or starts intermittently
ECU-related faults can affect fuel injection, ignition, throttle control, or immobilizer communication. But batteries, starters, fuel delivery, crank sensors, wiring, and key authorization can cause the same result. Note whether the engine cranks, whether the problem is intermittent, and what changed before it began.
2. A scan tool cannot communicate with the engine computer
No communication is a meaningful clue, especially if other modules still communicate. It can also result from a blown fuse, poor power or ground, a damaged diagnostic connector, network wiring, or the scan tool itself. Keep the exact scan result and identify which modules were reachable.
3. Injector, coil, throttle, or sensor codes keep returning
Some output-driver or reference-circuit codes may point toward the ECU, but a component, connector, or wiring fault must be considered first. Replacing parts without verifying the circuit can obscure the original issue.
4. Water damage or corrosion is visible
Water intrusion at the ECU, connector, or nearby harness is a reason to investigate. Photograph the label, connector, and surrounding area before cleaning or opening the module; that history can be useful during a review.
5. The problem began after a voltage or wiring event
Jump-start mistakes, charging-system failures, battery work, rodent damage, or an electrical short can affect modules and their supplies. Record the event and any work completed afterward.
What to gather before asking for ECU help
Have the vehicle year, make, model, engine, ECU part number, symptoms, scan codes, prior repair history, and any verified power, ground, or connector findings. This supports a focused diagnostic review instead of a blind module replacement.
